Mr. Danny Patterson

Dear Mr. Patterson,
In reference to the Ruftys--
I had a handwritten note in reference to Hans Rughty who landed Aug. 13 (or
17), 1750 on the Bennett Galey in Philadelphia. Along with this note was a
notation of William, Joseph, Edward, and George.
I have found a copy of the ship's manifest, and the fact that the names
listed were certainly "Rufty" names I thought maybe I could find some
connection--but, so far, no luck.
By talking to a friend, those who landed in Philadelphia often settled in
Berks, Lancaster or York counties before leaving Phil. Also a book The story of
the Pennsylvania Germans in Rowan and Cabarrus it lists other counties in Pa.:
Montgomery, Leheih, Northampton, Monroe, Lebanon, Dauphin, Cumberland and
Adams. Since you have internet you might could check there--as the book says
that both Germans and the Swiss settled in Rowman and Cabarrus between 1750 and
1775.
I have found a deed from George Rufty, Sr. to Mary Shaw (1851), and have
otherwise come up with a listing of George and Sophia's children. George also is
listed as conveying land to Wiley and John Rufty in a deed I found.
At this point I am writing a narrative on the "tall tales" of the family
leading up from George, Sr. to James H. Rufty and then down, somewhat
correlating other information on George's sons. As I told you on the telephone I
am most anxious to somehow link George, Sr. with his roots. If you can help on
this let me know.
Also, Mr. Jim Stikeleather has done extensive genealogical work on the
Rufty's. I helped him secure some pictures and have copies of some of his work,
but I could not let it be copied without his permission. You might want to see
it, though.
Mr. Stikeleather is of the opinion that the Ruftys came from Switzerland, and
when I was in Lucerne a couple of years ago I found people by the names of
Rueff, Ruef, and Ruefti in the phone 'book. (Since I couldn't speak their
language I didn't call.)
I have low vision and cannot drive out of town, so I am limited in my
research. If you find out anything, let me know.

Interview with Mr. Rufty:
Rose Post interviewed Fred Rufty.
"On D-Day," Post wrote, "Fred Rufty went ashore with the 6th
Engineer Special Brigade, 12 men attached to an ammunition company
and responsible for setting up a depot and issuing the ammunition
that helped other soldiers take a continent back."
"I went over from England in an LST," a landing ship transport,
he said. "I don't know what port I left from.
"I didn't know the date. But my father's birthday was June the
6th, and I figured that would be the date. I wrote him and told him
so in the code we used at the store."
(Like all other storekeepers of that day, O.O. Rufty had his own
marking code.)
Rufty told Post that the scariest part was waiting to go ashore.
"One minute you could look up and see the sky, and the next
minute it was like you were down between mountains of water. you
could see nothing but water.
"And then you could see part of the brigade coming in and getting
killed. And we could see the flamethrowers."
Bodies littered the beach -- and floated in the water.
"And the battleship was firing over the top of us."
"We went in at H-plus 240."
The first men hit the beaches at 6 a.m. Rufty went in at 10 a.m.
"I was glad to get on the ground again.
"I didn't see any live Germans at all. What was there was killed.
The flame throwers just went in and burned everything."
Rufty stayed on the beach for two weeks.
"I woke up one time, and pieces of fragments were falling on my
shelter half. It just burned a little bit of it. Anytime anything
like that happened, when a lot of fire was going on -- I slept with
my helmet on -- and when something like that happened, I'd pull it
over my face."
Rufty didn't keep that helmet.
